    Am I not looking at the same beasts in every instance ? My question is what is chemically happening and can this be turned into a viable domestic construct? that is obviously what Eldridge Clark and Blum had in mind in 1889, It is of absolutely no benefit to humanity in the hands of the corporations and t.p.t.b .. because of course you'll just get shafted again I welcome your comments I might then be able to answer some of these questions Duncan

    Hi Duncan

    Just out of interest, apparently if aluminum is treated with mercury chloride, it will then react with water to produce hydrogen, as the self oxidizing property of the aluminum is inhibited. I remember reading a few years ago about a car that would run on a handful of aluminum shavings - wondered if that is how it was done. Like you chemistry isn't my forte. Very interesting the carbon arc underwater - wonder what the amp draw is?

    Hi all.
    I have not read the links but if aluminum and mercury is involved then I suppose the explanation is simple. There are many youtube videos where you can see what mercury does to aluminum, it dissoves into it like aluminum was a spnge and mercury was water. This makes the aluminum lose its ability to make oxide and protect itself from water. Then it reacts with water leaving aluminum oxide or something, but releasing hydrogen, just as john_g said. The same can be done using gallium which is liquid at about 30 degree celsius but is non toxic. But it is rather expensive. The best part is that the gallium or mercury which ever you use, is not consumed in the process and can be recollected after the reaction, but it is juts very hard to seperate it out from all that gunk. That is the only problem. I experimented with this on a very small scale few years ago and it works. There are other methods, for example by using NaOH or KOH, these chemicals will make the water extremely alkaline and will eat off the aluminum oxide layer as it forms, but in this case yje leftover gunk will be more complex mix and the KOH or NaOH will still be consumed, so you need two consumables instead of just one when mercuty or gallium is used.     Always a pleasure to read you !

    No the safety was two fold and none of it a concern for your mentioned installations.

    "things" happen during theses types of experiments that require
    Extra caution [once you get things working proper].
    Ultimately these process's open doors and understandings that
    some feel very uncomfortable with [in the world as we presently know it ].

    I try not to play in these areas ,but I suppose like it or not
    a bit of "this or that" can happen at times.[little accidental PAGD at times !:.}

    Why don't you ask

    Hi Duncan, why don't you ask me, look on my web site and see the video showing this WITHOUT THE ARC and heavey current. No carbon electrodes either, the carbon comes from CO2 in the form of carbon black, you can see it in my video, not all the carbon is converted into a hydrocarbon gas, the excess falls to the bottom.

    This still needs work on it but should be a viable system in the future, just needs more investment and my time.

    Look very hard at the video as to what is happening.

    Thanks MJN .. I'll wizz over and take a look! as you can see I had a fair bit of back ground and history stacked up, I thought I'd put it together and post it for consideration this seems to already be a well tried and tested commercial system. The ambition of course is to make it simple and viable for easy home construction

    Look for this

    The three electrodes are SS 316, but note the colour change as it is working, and see the ring of carbon black that has fallen to the bottom of the center electrode. This is SMD as I call it and the gases produced are hydrocarbons.
