James A. Robey opened the Kentucky Water Fuel Museum at 1012 Manchester Street, near downtown Lexington, in the fall of 2005, and closed it about a year later. It was self-funded, 2,400 square feet in a former machine shop between a mechanic's and a collision repair place, with a homemade light-pipe sign on the front, and the state put up brown highway signs pointing to it. Robey said it was the first museum of its kind anywhere, and nobody has contradicted him.
This board gathers what the archive can find about it and about Robey's webcasts, which are where the Stephen Meyer interviews and Don Gabel's account of finding the dune buggy come from. In his own words
Robey wrote the museum up himself on Roadside America in September 2008, after it had closed:
The self-funded Kentucky Water Fuel Museum opened in the summer of 2005 as a result of several months of enthusiastic research on the suppressed topic of turning water into oxyhydrogen fuel. It became apparent to curator James A. Robey that the general public had no clue about the many patents, news articles, and public demonstrations of water-powered cars. The decision was made that a museum must be opened to tell the story, and during 2005, since it marked the 200th anniversary of the first internal combustion engine car powered by hydrogen from water!
He timed the opening to the bicentenary of Isaac de Rivaz's engine, which ran on hydrogen and oxygen, and he was fond of saying so. His book, Water Car: How to Turn Water into Hydrogen Fuel! (self-published, 2006), tells what he called the 200-year history of turning water into a fuel.
What was in it
The Wikipedia article on the museum was deleted years ago, but copies survive, and it was plainly written by someone who knew the exhibits. In summary, the museum set out to acquaint the public with the history of turning water into combustible oxy-hydrogen fuel, and to show that the inventors involved had wider engineering careers. On display were US patents for water-fuel devices back to the 1800s, scientific papers, newspaper and magazine articles, and newscast videos. The centrepiece was a 1971 Ford LTD converted to run on water by the Tennessee inventor Herman Pleasant Anderson, with a 1996 video interview of Anderson by Dr Cliff Ricketts of Middle Tennessee State University explaining the system.
The inventors and technologies it showcased, as the article listed them:
- William A. Rhodes and the series-cell electrolyser behind the oxy-hydrogen torches jewellers and glass-blowers use.
- Ruggero Maria Santilli and Magnegas, an underwater carbon arc descended from an 1898 patent.
- Henry "Dad" and Charles H. Garrett of Dallas, who patented and publicly demonstrated an electrolytic carburettor in 1935.
- François Cornish, whose 1987 patent made hydrogen on demand with an underwater aluminium-wire arc. Admiral Griffin experimented with a Cornish unit himself before he met Meyer; see his Southampton paper.
- Stanley Meyer, "who dedicated most of his adult life to the pursuit of producing an alternative fuel source from water to liberate his country from fossil fuel dependence", first demonstrating a vehicle in public in 1984.
- Archie Blue of New Zealand, whose under-the-hood device was patented and demonstrated in 1978.
- Yull Brown and the welders that made Brown's gas on demand.
- Francisco Pacheco, who revived an 1897 patent to make hydrogen and electricity from one cell.
- Charles Frazer of Ohio, who in 1918 was the first to patent a simple hydrogen booster.
- Andrija Puharich, whose water-fuel device powered a motor home.
- Daniel Dingel of the Philippines and his Toyota running on sea water.
- Plasma-arc explosions of water; sonoluminescence and John Keely; additives that make water itself burn, from carbide lamps on; Henry M. Paine's 1884 patent for tweaking oxy-hydrogen to burn like coal gas; water injection; and the Pogue carburettor and Jean Pain's compost heating among "other superior technologies".
There was humour too. The Herald-Leader found a partial script from a 1964 episode of The Munsters in which Grandpa invents a pill that turns water to gasoline, thinks about using it for mankind, and sells it to the oil companies for $50,000.
What the paper made of it
Andy Mead of the Lexington Herald-Leader visited in February 2006 ("Thirst quencher for gas guzzlers?", 6 February 2006, syndicated by Knight Ridder; an archived copy survives). He found the natural-gas heat switched off and a wood stove burning recycled pallets, a 1966 Chevrolet van in the middle of the floor that Robey hoped to have idling on water within weeks, and a curator of 46 who ran a janitorial service and some rental property, admitted to no scientific training, and did his research on the internet. Robey told him: "We really couldn't do worse than we are, using fossil fuels. It's the worst way we could find to warm ourselves or get from Point A to Point B."
Mead put the idea to Joseph Romm, who had overseen the Department of Energy's hydrogen programme under Clinton: "He seems to think there is an unlimited amount of free hydrogen hiding in water. I think the exact opposite is true." Gerald Huffman of the University of Kentucky's fossil-fuel consortium said that it takes electricity to split water and around Lexington electricity is coal, "so there's no gain." Robey's answer was that the scientific community was "bought and paid for".
The article also records something this archive cares about: Robey said that Meyer had at one time come to Lexington, shown local businessmen a working model producing hydrogen, and invited them to invest in return for future dealerships. That fits the dealership sales manual the archive holds.
After the museum
The museum closed in 2006; a Roadside America correspondent found it "shut down and reverted to its former use" by December 2007. Robey carried on by other means. From February 2007 he ran a webcast series on BlogTalkRadio, more than a hundred shows over three years, which is the subject of the next thread on this board. In 2008 he helped found a Louisville group, Kentuckiana Alternate Fuels and Energy (KAFE), and webcast its meetings. He is on film at its October 2008 show-and-tell, on ignition coils and boosters: James Robey at the Alternative Energy Show and Tell, transcribed with the film playing beside the words.
