Manta PMG226 PMG whats makes it tick

    MANTA generator has claimed to produce 12VDC @ 35amps with just one turn of the shaft by hand this was hard for me to wrap my head around but I wanted to know more I looked web far and wide

    The Manta Story - These are NEW motors, NEVER USED that had been claimed as 'freight damaged' many years ago and then put into storage - Years later, broken parts were swapped out or replaced with new parts, all work done here in the U.S.A. - By using improved hand fabricated parts we feel these motors work better than the original motors since our laminations are a bit more conductive and high temperature epoxy is utilized as adhesive insuring a tough bond. We bought them from a seller that repackaged them and put their name over the original makers name. When we got them we in-turn removed their name and replaced it with our own name sticker indicating "MANTA" brand - Most people we speak with Now-A-Days suspect these were once made by Briggs originally. We sold thousands into the wind turbine industries over the last 5-10 years as "MANTA" brand PMG's or generators. In the wind power industry they routinely use motors as inexpensive generators. If you spin a brushed motor is does make a highly efficient electric generator! This effect is also used for regenerative breaking in EV applications. Brushed motors are also more efficient at capturing electrical energy than 3-phase motors are!! Again brushes also have many other distinct advantages since they are simple mechanical devices, easily understood and replaceable in the field, requiring minimal infrastructure to find repair parts even in very remote areas PLUS they are lightning-strike, static-discharge and EMR/EMP proof too. Sometimes simple is best!!
    Now that the supply of these motors has 'dried-up' we have since re-opened the storage vault and are now actively resurrecting these little gems.
    some clams:that there easy to burn up unbalanced but still a torque monster and a killer generator so if anbody can fill in the gaps would love to get the background of this little monster,did Briggs build this motor? If not who did ? Here is a cool fact there is no wires inside the plates are the wires the brushes output DC directly no rectification.






    is there a way to stop overheating it seems the design could be reworked for greater output so I opened this tread for any information anyone has about this design

    I recall about 8 yrs ago Briggs had a motor I think they called the E-TEC, looked just like that, was rated at about 5 h.p. if I recall correctly.
    I also recently came across Manta information, it caught my eye as well...should have ordered 1 or 2 just to play with .

    ETEK motor by Briggs & Stratton

    This is one of the most powerful DC motors available. There is nothing like it out there. Many of the most powerful spinner robots out there have been using this motor with great success (including Nightmare, Son of Whyachi, Moebius and many more). WARNING: this motor is NOT an ordinary motor, and should be handled with GREAT care. It is very capable of serious power and should always be completely secured before applying any power to it.

    Brushless ETEK motor by Briggs & Stratton

    Get monstrous power from this motor! Brushless Permanent Magnet Syncronous motor otherwise known as PMAC. The phase resistance is very low at 10 milli-ohms, so it is 90% efficient. This motor has a built-in cooling fan set for a CCW direction, but can be run CW with optional fan.

    This motor is a direct replacement for the Etek (Briggs & Stratton) brushed DC motor,which means it will work with our Etek Mount. It is an Axial Air Gap permanent magnet motor. This technology is very compact. Highest power to weight ratio of any PM motor technology.

    Commutation is accomplished with an internal Hall Cell assembly, connected to the 6-pin external wire harness.

    What makes the Etek motor technology unique is the use of copper bus bars rather than steel and copper wire as the basic building block of the armature. These copper bus bars are stamped, bent, coated and assembled into a thin rotary disk. End clips connect the tips of the bus bars to shorten the air gap between the magnets. Steel is inserted between the bus bars to shorten the air gap between the magnets. One of the most unique characteristics of the motor is that simply machining the edges of the copper bars produces the commutator. Since commutator is built in, there is no need for a separate assembly. The motor uses neodymium magnet technology.

    Lynch Motor

    here is what I have found on Wikipedia about the Lynch motor
    In this motor the iron laminations are rectangular, which made it possible to have them commercially made from material intended for this purpose without the expense of a special stamping tool. Because the flux passes through the laminations along one axis only, it became possible to take advantage of grain-oriented material normally used in large transformers. This has much better magnetic properties along the grain orientation but worse properties in other directions, so in the traditional type of motor it gives little or no benefit.

    This motor went into small-scale production in 1988 with the EV conversion firm London Innovation and later with the Lynch Electric Motor Company (LEMCO). In 1989 four of them powered the boat "An Stradag", driven by the Countess of Arran, to a world record speed for an electric boat of just over 80 km/h (50 mph). The motor was adopted by the Swiss company ASMO for use in its electric go-kart drive systems[3]. Its efficiency extends the life of the batteries and so improves the economics of running an electric kart track.

    The patents and license rights for the manufacturing of the Lynch motor are held by the Lynch IP company, which has sold a license to Briggs and Stratton to manufacture the ETEK motor.

    LEMCO continued to manufacture motors and now trades under the name of LMC (Lynch Motor Company) which now owns the Lynch IP company and therefore all rights and patents pertaining to the motor.

    In 2009, Cedric Lynch has parted company with LMC and is working for Agni Motors, which is producing similar motors.

    Lynch motors are mentioned as being a unique product in the documentary "The White Diamond" about a lighter than air ship: "This is actually an interesting motor. It is designed by somebody called Lynch in England. He never went to University and doesn't know any mathematics and stuff like that, but he taught himself electrical engineering. And it turns out the motor he made is one the world's leading in terms of power and mass. And he's developed his own kind of algebra to do that but no other academic can understand what he's doing. But he seems to know more than many academics in electrical engineering departments because this motor is very good performance ... the best that I could find."

    is it just me, or is this motor VERY similar to Tesla's modified homopolar generator with spirally segmented sections?

    Yea it looks like there similar but the Lynch seems easier to build, I was looking at how a induction generator smooths the the eddy currents and how voltage climbs so rapidly, now take the low resistance of the Lynch design and how these concepts could work together in a new device. also include the Tesla pat406968 (I think the magnets force the current wave shape) I noticed in my experiments with induction power generation the lower ohms the faster the field forms at speeds as low as 500rpm, I can get hundreds of volts with the right capacitance value but the steel acts as magnetic break, so add thick copper in the Lynch configuration with allot less steel maybe. Just spit-balling some Ideas

    yes the new motor from Agni Motors have thermal protection
    they were Champions at the worlds first zero carbon, clean emission e-grand prix
    there are a few PDF's on there website that are worth checking out
    you can find the Manta's on ebay the about $350 US until the supply runs out
