It's reported that the largest US refinery has been shut down by Hurricane Harvey, and we could be seeing gasoline prices increase as supply decreases.
Therefore, one solution could be to run your engine on fumes, literally.

Why not run your gasoline generator like so?

Pogue Carburetor

United States Patent #2,026,798
Download Patent as PDF

The old timer in the first post mentioned the Pogue Carburator. Here's the follow up on that:

Charles Nelson Pogue invented the 200-mpg carburetor.

See story about Charles Pogue Carb.

Operation of Pogue carburetor is relatively simple. Fuel pump, lower left of diagram above, forces gasoline through fuel line and out, as fine mist, through two nozzles at bottom of primary heating chamber. Only pure vapor is drawn up through spiral passages. When vapor reaches center of primary chamber, a vacuum-operated reciprocating pump forces it through conduit into secondary heating chamber, where vapor goes through second set of spiral passages. Vapor then enters downdraft air horn where it mixes with air and flows into intake manifold of engine. Gasoline which is not vaporized in the primary chamber, condenses, flows back through drain to fuel line and into pump.

US Patent 4,177,779
Tom Ogle, Inventor of the Super Carburetor
Argosy Magazine had a five-page article about Tom Ogle and the media witnessed test of the “Oglemobile”. On that test run, Tom Ogle achieved more than 100 MPG in a 4,600 pound 1970 Ford Galaxie.
Tom Ogle was granted patent # 4,177,779 on Dec. 11th, 1979
“It all started with a lawn mower”
A fuel economy system for an internal combustion engine which, when installed in a motor vehicle, obviates the need for a conventional carburetor, fuel pump and gasoline tank. The system operates by using the engine vacuum to draw fuel vapors from a vapor tank through a vapor conduit to a vapor equalizer which is positioned directly over the intake manifold of the engine. The vapor tank is constructed of heavy duty steel or the like to withstand the large vacuum pressure and includes an air inlet valve coupled for control to the accelerator pedal. The vapor equalizer ensures distribution of the correct mixture of air and vapor to the cylinders of the engine for combustion, and also includes its own air inlet valve coupled for control to the accelerator pedal. The system utilizes vapor-retarding filters in the vapor conduit, vapor tank and vapor equalizer to deliver the correct vapor/air mixture for proper operation. The vapor tank and fuel contained therein are heated by running the engine coolant through a conduit within the tank. Due to the extremely lean fuel mixtures used by the present invention, gas mileage in excess of one hundred miles per gallon may be achieved.

Tom Ogle's Vapor Fuel System

In the 1970s, a man named Thomas Hans Wenor Wolfgang Peter Ogle developed a new type of carburetor that pressurized gasoline into a vapor and injected it into the firing chambers. After installing it in his Ford Galaxie, the car was measured to get 113 miles per gallon.
He died under mysterious circumstances. Some say he was murdered.
He was granted a US patent:
US 4177779 A
EP0008312A1
WO1979000053A1

Man, there are ton of patents on this subject. It's amazing. Ogle is telling you where to look. Funny that there is no mention of Pogue.I am aware of the following United States patents which are generally directed towards systems for improving the efficiency and/or reducing the pollutant emissions of internal combustion engines:

The Chapin U.S. Pat. No. (1,530,882) discloses a gasoline tank surrounded by a water jacket, the latter of which is included in a circulation system with the radiator of the automobile. The heated water in the circulation system causes the fuel in the gasoline tank to readily vaporize. Suction from the inlet manifold causes air to be drawn into the tank to bubble air through the gasoline to help form the desired vapor which is then drawn to the manifold for combustion. -
