He states he gets 40-45 miles per gallon on vegetable oil verses 27 on regular diesel. I have a Mercedes just like his except mine is an 84. I get slightly less milage on biodiesel than I do on regular diesel and so does everyone else that uses biodiesel. But my car runs smoother and doesn't smoke at all and the biodiesel I make myself costs me half as much as I would pay at the pump for regular diesel. By the way plant or vegetable oil can only be used in diesel engines. If the oil could be fermented in some way to make ethanol then it could be used in a gasoline engine. So the bottom line is if you want to use plants for fuel you will have to have a way to process it into biodiesel or ethanol. Since the process for making biodiesel is much simpler my son and I went that route. I hope this information will keep someone from destroying an expensive engine.

These are not car engines, and perhaps more forgiving than a car engine, but I am trying to get as simple as possible.

I have been to Echo 2 times, and loved it. It is like an ocean of information there. I got my bamboo and kale from there, and tons of great information about growing plants in Florida.

But do tell me how you process your oil.

Run a diesel engine car on plant oil.

This is a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300SD that I purchased in 1992 for $8000. I drove my newborn daughter home from the hospital in it in 1996. Its odometer broke three years ago at 356,000 miles. It probably has 500,000 miles on it now, and it's still going strong.

Though I demonstrate Canola oil burning in this engine, I mainly use a similar, though non-edible, oil called jatropha that I grow in my back yard, at a cost of about 35 cents per gallon to produce. Canola (rapeseed) oil can be purchased in bulk for about $1.75 per gallon. On either oil, this car gets 40 to 45 miles per gallon versus about 27 miles per gallon on petroleum diesel.

These are the best cars for burning vegetable oil, because their iron blocks are more tolerant of hotter-burning plant oil than more delicate aluminum block engines in newer diesel cars.

Jatropha appeals to me alot. All you have to do is extract the oil, filter put in car done as I understand it.

The down side I saw was the 3 - 5 years it takes for the first harvest, but I am always looking at other means of getting from point A to B easier with the resources I have.

Can you tell me of someone in Florida doing this? I would like to visit an operation who has this in place, so I can see if it is viable for my needs.

Yes, I have found you have to match the engine to the fuel you are burning, Mercedes-Benz 300SD , is a remarkable car for this application.

I can't find used veggi oil down here, so looks like I will be making my own in some way.

So where did you get your Jatropha plants, and how do you process your oil before you put it in your car?

Hi Matt

Thanks for the input. My goal is to get all my energy from 1/3 acre in some means. I have heard of sugar beets from the book "Alcohol can be a gas" but the book does not have sources of getting the plants. Think I will order some and give them a go, the best method I have learned from great gardeners is try all the varieties and find out what ones work best for you.

Some advice.

When you don't have much money, use the time that you have.

Old TV's / Computer power supplied have transistors and magnet wire inside. Takes time to harvest but I have found the resistors are heavy and worth the time. The transistors you harvest can be used to test limits of circuits without fear of destroying them.

Goto Youtube and start watching videos on each electrical part of the Simple School Girl setup ( resistor, transistor, diode ) learn what they are and how they function. There are several videos there that explain each part of the circuit.

A note book is a very good idea. Here you can document what works and what does not work. Best to document starting voltage, and ending voltage. ( know the difference between resting voltage, load voltage, and charging voltage )

Keep an extra charged battery for your meter. Often you will check your settings and think you have OU, only to find out that the battery in your meter went dead. When things are going too good to be true often that is the case.

This board I believe is one of the most helpful resources on the net for Bedini projects several here have worked directly with Bedini and will help point you in the right direction. You may or may not hit OU, but you will learn much about electronics, and may pick up a friend or two.

When i was listening to that was the guy stated that you could fix the spark plug that was on the market if you just used a Dremel tool to take the spark plugs they did not produce correctly then modify it.

The best method I have found is to goto those who are getting rid of their golf cart batteries ( they swap them out every so often because of the age factor ) and purchase good used golf cart batteries that are starting to decline. ( due to natural sulfation process ) they still hold amps and you can check to verify that they are good which saves you many an hour charge / discharging batteries that may be no good to begin with. I have gotten these for the price of the lead about 20 -$30 a shot. These being 125 amp hour batteries I consider that to be a great deal. I don't believe I could make my own for that kind of a deal.

I once considered fork lift batteries, but the extreme weight, and the thoughts of what if a cell goes bad has stopped me from doing that. It is much easier to build up a bank of batteries and replace a single battery if it goes bad than if you have a cell go bad on the fork lift battery.

I have seen sites where people have made their own batteries, but with so many used batteries available, I don't see it viable, I make friends with a golf cart dealer. that way when one of these batteries go bad you simply say hey can you swap me this bad one for one of the other ones you have. I have found 3 dealers that will do that with me, and it works awesome.

I have purchased more alum, and I intend to experiment more with conversions. So far this has been the best way for me to go.

I am part of a yahoo group that does this and other electrolites. Battery conversions.

I have one converted battery still working but only has a top voltage of 11.80 However it does give me about 15 amp hours of work. Others have been much more sucessful with this.

Origins of Oil...

I being a creationist, believe oil was created along with the fossils with a world wide flood. Some thing of this nature of this video.... again this is theory, as no one was there to see it themselves, we can only look at what we see around us and make our best guess.

I have noted that many tropical plants have been found in the artic, and historically the earth had much more oxygen then it does now from levels of oxygen that has been found in fossils.

I find it interesting so many cultures around the world mention the same type of story of a boat and a flood.

The Doc's got some interesting thing going and I have been able to replicate most of his findings (I can't do any electrolysis in the present environment) but otherwise the circuits appear to be working and what we lack are the tools to properly measure things since I personally believe that our conventional tools ain't gonna cut it.
I have been very interested in the leds lighting up, I have been wanting this for my monopole energizer...

I just got a scope, but I have no clue how to use it...

Ahh more adventures yet to be had.
