The expensive instruments are nice, and almost always are required for Verification. They are usually NOT required for making breakthroughs. Only the human mind is required for that. Give us the breakthroughs and the instruments can be found.
The only way the people who want to us to stop can succeed, is if we decide to stop work ourselves.
I admit I don't have the tools or materials to do really ambitious projects. Few of us do. But does that mean we should just sit on our arses and wait for someone to else to do it?!
I've only been at this for three years and I love looking back on my old projects and seeing just how much progress has been made.
This was the first pulse motor I ever built...

and in just three years I've gone from that to motors that are more efficient than most that are commercially available...

We "amateurs" shouldn't be written off just yet
Tesla didn't have half of what even we have available to us today... neither did Stubblefield or many other of the masters... If we have the dedication and the imagination to achieve our goals, then time is the only thing in our way
