Bubbles at the plate cut local conductivity and seed the low-density breakdown region
Mat et al. two-phase-flow electrolyzer model + experiment: gas bubbles nucleating on the electrode strongly change mass transfer, flow field, bulk conductivity, and the macroscopic current-density distribution — void fraction (gas fraction) is measurable via electrolyte resistivity change. Higher current density grows bubbles fed by BOTH the reaction and dissolved gas from the surrounding liquid. Implication: the bubble/vapor film at the plate face is a real, quantifiable low-conductivity layer — the same low-density region where Wetz's mechanism-2 (impact ionization) and the Townsend vapor-film discharge live. Void fraction from resistivity is a bench diagnostic for how much gas film sits on the plate.
