Barrier acts as an afterburner, entrapping and igniting unspent hydrogen gas
Due to hydrogen's high velocity, unburnt gas occurs at the flame output; the barrier 50's material retards movement and entraps unspent hydrogen gas, which is then ignited and burns within the barrier as superheated air disperses through material 54, giving the barrier an afterburner function.
